Have you ever wondered how a crematorium makes sure they are cremating the right body and that the correct cremains get back to the family? It’s reasonable for a family to have this concern, but fortunately it’s not something you have to worry about. Crematoriums follow very strict protocols for properly identifying a body and tracing it throughout the cremation process.

The most important element of identification is a cremation tag. These special ID tags provide a simple way to know who it is and ensure the cremains are given to the correct family.

How Cremation Tags Are Made

A cremation tag must be made for the unique environment of a cremation chamber. Cremation ID tags are usually a small, thin disc made out of stainless steel that can withstand the high heat of the retort and exposure to flames without being damaged. However, not all types of stainless steel are appropriate for cremation. Often 304 stainless steel is used due to its high melting point. Aluminum and brass can also be used to make cremation tags.

Information on a Cremation ID Tag

The cremation tag will have some form of identifier that’s either engraved, embossing or stamped on it. The identifier could be:

  • A unique number or code
  • The deceased’s name
  • The deceased’s date of birth
  • The deceased’s date of death
  • The deceased’s Social Security Number

If an ID number is used, that should be documented so that the body is connected to the number all the way through the cremation. The crematorium should use chain of custody documents that note what all was done to identify someone and track their body.

Using the Cremation Tag

The next step in the cremation process is using the ID tag. If the crematorium is transporting the body from a hospital, morgue or other facility the cremation tag will be brought and affixed to the body. If the funeral home isn’t responsible for the transport the body will receive the cremation tag upon arrival at the crematorium.

The tag will remain on the body the entire time. Shortly before the cremation, the staff will check the tag to verify ID one last time. They’ll also make sure the cremation tag stays on or with the body when it goes into the retort.

Will You Receive the Cremation Tag?

You may receive the cremation tag with the cremains. This is usually standard procedure for the crematoriums that use tags for IDing and tracing at their facility. If getting the cremation tag is important to you, ask the funeral director if tags are used and request that it be stored with the cremains.
