Here in the Austin area, we enjoy a large selection of end-of-life services that cater to virtually every type of funeral. Our Lady of the Rosary Cemetery and Prayer Gardens is a perfect example of that.

Although the name suggests that it’s a Catholic cemetery, Our Lady of the Rosary is actually open to people of all faiths as well as those who don’t belong to any particular religion. It’s also one of the few cemeteries that offer all types of burial in one place.

Choose Any Type of Burial

The founders of Our Lady of the Rosary, Nick and Ellen Brumder, decided to create a different kind of cemetery after numerous trips to Austria. They were intrigued and inspired by the cemeteries there, which are beautiful green spaces that are central to the culture. And the Brumders wanted to make their cemetery a place where all felt welcome.

One way of making sure that Our Lady of the Rosary served all those in the Austin area is offering a variety of burial services. In the U.S. there are three types of burial:

  • Traditional burial
  • Green burial
  • Cremation burial

Most cemeteries offer one or possibly two types of burial, but Our Lady of the Rosary is among a small number that offers all three. In fact, Our Lady of the Rosary was one of the first two green cemeteries in Texas. It’s also the first xeriscaped, perpetual care cemetery in the country.

While everyone is welcome, the grounds are divided into different gardens, some of which are limited in how burials are conducted and who is buried there. The gardens include:

  • The Butterfly Cremation Garden is not far from the cemetery entrance.
  • The Garden of Precious Love is reserved for infants and babies.
  • Marian Garden is located in the open fields in the center of the cemetery.
  • Natural burial is an option in St. Francis Garden. There is also the St. Francis Walk, which is used for cremation burial.
  • Holy Family Garden where there are more secluded exclusive spaces.
  • The St. John Paul Garden offers standard and premium spaces.
  • Forest Garden is a tree-filled area at the north end of the cemetery.
  • The Walk of the Rosary path near the Resurrection Cross and Marian Garden has space available.

By design, Our Lady of the Rosary looks and feels more like a park than a cemetery. The Brumders carefully maintain the entire property so that every burial site adds to the beauty.

20 Peaceful Acres in the Middle of the Metro

When you are at Our Lady of the Rosary it’s easy to forget that you’re in one of the largest metros in the country. The cemetery is a spacious 20 acres of beautiful Texas Hill Country. To maintain the natural beauty, 12 acres are comprised of green space that won’t be developed or used for burials.

Those who wish to be buried at Our Lady of the Rosary appreciate that the cemetery isn’t trying to fit in as many gravesites as possible and that environmental integrity is a top priority. As you make your way through the cemetery you’ll find tree-lined paths and a large spring-fed pond that’s ideal for birdwatching. There’s also a prayer grotto, rose gardens, fields of wildflowers, picnic areas and a small waterfall.

Among the natural features, guests will also find statutes and outdoor art installations like the iconic Resurrection Cross, which was built by Nick Brumder and his son. There are also benches located throughout the cemetery so that guests can stop and appreciate gorgeous views of the San Gabriel River Valley.

Our Lady of the Rosary is so picturesque and peaceful people go there just to walk the shaded prayer path, which is a short distance from the cemetery grounds. Rather than being somber, many describe the cemetery as being a relaxing, uplifting place where you can feel at peace.

It’s clear to all who visit Our Lady of the Rosary Cemetery and Prayer Gardens that the groundkeepers take great pride in making it a tranquil, pristine place to remember loved ones.
