Romans 8:28: And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose
Sammy Lawrence Washington Sr. lived a life defined by love, service, and connection. A devoted son, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, he brought warmth, laughter, and generosity to everyone fortunate enough to know him. He was born on October 1, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas, to John D. Washington and Melinda Luckey-Washington.
Sammy graduated from Brackenridge High School, where he proudly served on the student council and shared his love of football with his brothers. Shortly after graduation, he answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army, where he served in the Infantry Unit, which included a tour in Vietnam. His distinguished service earned him the high honors of the Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal, which reflected both his courage and his great pride in being an Army veteran.
After proudly serving his country, Sammy dedicated more than 20 years to Sears, where he exceeded expectations and went the extra mile to serve his clients. Outside of work, Sammy poured his energy into what mattered to him most: his family and spending time outdoors. In addition, he enjoyed working on vehicles, tackling home improvement projects, traveling throughout Texas to hunt and fish, and striking up conversations with everyone he met—a reflection of his friendly spirit and genuine love for people.
Retirement allowed Sammy to fully embrace the simple joys of life. He was able to achieve his long-dreamed-of goal of obtaining property outside the city of San Antonio. He faithfully cheered for the Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs, started his mornings with coffee at The Little Fish Factory, and treasured special moments with his grandchildren and sister.
Sammy passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at 2:54 p.m. at Audie Murphy VA Medical Center. It is a profound honor to lay him to rest at Fort Sam National Cemetery, where he is surrounded by the natural beauty that brought him such peace and happiness.
His infectious laughter, welcoming smile, and unwavering warmth will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Sammy was preceded in death by his parents, John D. Washington (Alice) and Melinda Luckey-Washington, and his siblings Glenda, Naran, William Donnell, and David. He leaves behind a loving family who will continue his legacy: his sister Teresa Dynes of San Antonio, TX; his children: Sammy Washington, Jr. (Kim) of San Antonio, TX, Eboni Washington of Austin, TX, and Tiffany McClain of Augusta, GA; his granddaughters Tysiah, Kenya, Diadra, Jordan, Amina, Neveah, and Ava; his grandson Jaxson and step-grandson Brayden; his aunt Margaret Robinson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
