Brent Neil Shiver – Age 47, died peacefully in his home in Austin, TX, on December 3rd, surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous two-year battle with colon cancer.
Brent was born on July 22nd, 1973, in Atlanta, GA, to Kyle-Anne and David (Buck) Shiver. Brent was a proud graduate of Parkview High School and was a three-year Georgia state champion wrestler.
Brent attended Northwestern University on a full scholarship for wrestling and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Brent also attended Gallaudet University to earn his second bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. While working for different technology companies in Chicago, Brent graduated with a master’s and doctoral degrees in Computer Sciences from DePaul University. After completing his Ph.D., Brent joined the IBM Accessibility Team in 2014 as an Advisory Software Engineer to pursue his passion for ensuring accessible technology.
Brent was happily married to Shannon Kennedy Shiver, the love of his life and his partner for eight beautiful years. Brent is survived by Shannon, his two precious boys (Jackson and Beckett Shiver), his parents, sister and brother-in-law (Amanda and Judson Morrison), mother and father-in-law (Deborah and Michael Kennedy), brothers-in-law and sister-in-law (Matthew Kennedy, Michael Kennedy II, and Anna Layden).
In addition to his love of being a father & husband and spending time with his family and friends, Brent’s other passions included traveling, exercising, self-educating, being an innovator, teaching, being a role model, giving back to the deaf community, and advocating with humor.
Brent was a very remarkable person who touched us in so many different ways. Brent will remain in our hearts forever, never to be forgotten.
Family and friends will be invited to attend a private virtual Celebration of Life (Memorial Service) for Brent on Saturday, February 6th, at 3 pm.
