Romulo “Big” Reyes

September 27, 1929 -
September 8, 2025
Birthplace: Austin, Texas
Resided In: Austin, Texas

Beloved husband, father, and “Big,” Romulo Reyes passed away peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2025, at 10:28 a.m. Just weeks shy of his 96th birthday, Big lived a long, full, and deeply meaningful life.

Saying goodbye is never easy, but Big left this world rich in love and legacy. He was the devoted husband of Lucy, his beautiful wife of 73 years, and the proud father of four children and their spouses: Anna and Lupe Riojas, Robert Reyes, Rene and Annette Reyes, and Debbie (Reyes) and Craig Alter. He was lovingly known as Big to his 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, all of whom adored him.

Big was a man of steadfast dedication. He began working at an early age and remained with the same company for over 50 years, retiring in 1996 at the age of 67. He also honorably served his country in the National Guard, embodying service and commitment in every aspect of his life.

Family was everything to Big. He cherished every moment shared — from Red Lobster lunches to Cisco’s Bakery breakfasts. Known for his sense of humor and colorful personality, he had a knack for telling the same stories over and over — and when reminded, would simply say, “Well, now I’m telling you for the 11th time.”

Big had a way of making everyone feel welcome. At family gatherings, he always made sure no one ate alone — grabbing another plate and pulling up a chair to join new guests at the table. He kept companies on their toes with constant bill inquiries and customer service calls, and he prided himself on being frugal — or as he liked to say, “able to make a penny scream.” While he was generous with his children, any loan came with a price. “I’m only charging you simple interest,” he’d tease — a fact he’d humorously deny in his later years.

The family will forever miss his playful greetings of “Hey girl!” and his trademark farewells: “See you later, alligator” and “Don’t cramp my style, crocodile!”

Big is survived by his loving wife Lucille Reyes, his four children, his numerous grand and great-grandchildren, and his sister Hope Martinez of Austin, Texas. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Romulo Reyes Sr. and Juanita Reyes, his sister Margaret Reyes and his two brothers, Daniel Reyes and John Reyes, all of whom welcomed him into eternal rest.

The family will receive visitors on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. during a celebration of life at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in Big’s honor.

Romulo Reyes lived a life marked by love, laughter, loyalty, and lasting impact. His presence will be missed dearly, but his stories, sayings, and spirit will live on in all who knew and loved him.
