Mark Wieland Obituary

Mark R. Wieland, 73, died on December 28, 2025, after three months’ hospice care in his East Austin home.  Born on September 14, 1952 to Raymond and Andrea Wieland of Rochester, Minnesota, Mark attended school in Rochester and the University of Minnesota.  Following an early bout with cancer, Mark moved from Minnesota to Austin, Texas in the early 1980s, where he worked in public relations for the City of Austin, and later established a plumbing business (all to support his fishing, camping, canoeing, and traveling). Mark left this world being both courageous and calm. Though he survived lymphoma in 1979 and brain cancer in 2019 it was Parkinson’s that got him in the end.

Visitors came every day for the three months he was in hospice. Witnessing the kindness and support of those that loved him confirmed our shared humanity.

Mark loved fishing, camping, nature, outdoor gear, Cabela’s, scuba diving, tools, motorcycles, dogs, photography, science fiction, being helpful, thinking something through, and learning new things. He could build a computer, solve any plumbing challenge, rewire a house, take professional photos, do complicated tree work, build things, sharpen knives, create effective marketing campaigns for nonprofits, and back up big trailers as easy as could be.  One of Mark’s greatest gifts was his sense of humor. Some might beg to differ with a groan from one of his many puns.

Mark was steady: No anger, drama, blaming, or yelling. Mark would jump into action in an emergency situation without hesitation.

The world lost a good man when Mark Wieland died.

Mark is survived by his partner, Kim Lehman; sisters, Barbara Wieland of Tucson, Arizona and Heidi (William) Oehler of Rochester, Minnesota; and nieces, Rebecca Stever and Lucy Swanson of Minnesota and their children.

A celebration of life is planned for February 7, 2026 at 2:00 pm at the Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin, Texas.
