John Huntington Allen Jr., (Jay), age 64, passed away peacefully in Austin, TX, on September 17, 2025 after being diagnosed with lung cancer nine months ago.
John lived a life full of curiosity, kindness, and quiet strength. He graduated from Memphis University School and Trinity University in San Antonio, TX with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Asian Studies and Philosophy. John was a self taught computer programmer and was employed with EDS in Austin, TX during the Y2K years. After EDS he found himself working for the State of Texas in the Health and Human Services Department in many roles and finally as a Software Development Manager IV. His team remarked that he was “the best boss I ever had”. John will be remembered for his sweet personality, his warm heart, quick wit, and deep love for his two precious kitties who were his constant companions.
John was preceded in death by his father, John Huntington Allen Sr. and is survived by his mother, Betty Allen and his sister, Vanessa Dobbins, (Martin) of Memphis, along with many friends, coworkers, and extended family who will miss him dearly.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to John’s caregiving team from Heavenly Care, especially Wayne and Darla, whose love, laughter, and friendship brought comfort and joy during his final months.
A private celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in John’s memory to the Special Olympics of Texas, which was close to his heart. Donations can be made here:
