Betty Gathers Thomas was born in Sharon, Pa to Pauline Gourley Gathers and Thomas Benton Gathers on October 8, 1926. She peacefully passed away on April 9, 2021.
Betty and William J. Thomas were married for over 70 years. She graduated from Sharon High School in 1944 and The C.H. Buhl School of Nursing in 1947. She was an industrial nurse at Sharon Steel prior to working with polio patients in N. Carolina and California. She later worked as a private duty nurse in Frederick, Md, Philadelphia, Pa, and Stroudsburg, Pa. When living in Mt. Pocono, Pa she was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Cerebral Palsy, The American Red Cross and other charities.
Betty loved spending time with her family, playing bridge, golf and walking around the neighborhood in Pelican Pointe, where she and Bill retired in 1995. They traveled all over the world and played golf wherever they could, from Pebble Beach to Betty’s favorite Turnberry in Scotland and many in between. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and Pelican Pointe GCC.
Betty is survived by her daughter Paula McCracken of E. Sandwich, Ma; granddaughter Andrea Harris and husband Bruce Harris of Austin, Tx; grandson Jay McCracken and wife Kristine of Waquoit, Ma; great grandchildren Ryan Harris and Kaitlyn Harris of Austin, Tx; Alyssa M. Hricisak and husband Tommy of Alexandria, Va; Sophia Borges of Waquoit, Ma; brother Dean Gathers of Hermitage, Pa and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Bill; her son Jonathan and brothers Leroy and Paul.
Memorial Services will be held at a later date in Hermitage, Pa.
