Almas Jamil Sami’

On July 28, 1957, a baby boy by the name of Almas Stevenson Jr. was born to Almas Stevenson Sr and George Ann Stevenson in Clinton, Oklahoma. He enjoyed playing drums at his local church; making local newspaper appearances mid-jump shot for the Red Tornadoes basketball team.

Almas served his country in the United States Air Force; moving his new family to San Antonio, Texas.

In a pivotal encounter with a possible slave-owner ancestor of the Stevenson family name that stirred deep simultaneous emotions of shame for the owner side and rejection for the owned side; he wiped out the Stevenson surname and chose his oldest brother’s new chosen surname of Sami’. Almas Jamil Sami’ went on to write a book titled The Unshackled Mind. Through promoting his new book, he discovered his passion for grass roots community work. He had a love of helping steer young men away from the paths of destruction. He presented uplifting speeches to prison inmates, Universities, and community engagements all around the country. He helped organize the founding of a community center in his hometown of Clinton, Oklahoma in 2011. His passion for community service finally won the approval of his bread-winning father who boasted that his youngest son was the “NAACP and the Urban League” all rolled into one.

His son defined him as a warrior sage. “As a sage with failing memory, it was torture for him – not having the words.”

His youngest daughter remembers if he forgot something in his winter years he would say “charge it to my head not my heart.”

He was a warm soul who could even make you laugh about serious subject matters.
